MAINTENANCE WORKER II THE POSITIONUnder general supervision, performs general maintenance work in connection with the repair, construction and upkeep of District buildings and equipment; and performs work as required. RESPONSIBLE TO:Director – Maintenance and OperationsDISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSPositions in this class are assigned a variety of tasks in the building trades. Incumbents may perform semi- and skilled work independently, with a crew or assisting journey workers on District projects and repairs. The duties listed below are typical for positions in the class collectively, but no one position will necessarily include all these duties.EXAMPLES OF DUTIESThe duties listed are typical, but not exclusive:Performs and/or assists in maintenance, installation and repair to buildings and equipment in connection with all areas of maintenance, grounds and custodial including the construction, mechanical, and electrical trades.·Makes routine and emergency repairs and adjustments to buildings, furniture, equipment and facilities such as, but not limited to, roofs, locks, plumbing, walls, flooring, glass, cement, asphalt, and doors.·Restoration and repair of various surfaces, and finishes.·Clean and maintain rain gutters and drains.·Uses power and hand tools to do tasks.·Lifts, stacks and moves heavy furniture, equipment and materials.·Operates light to medium weight trucks and equipment to pick up or deliver equipment, furniture and supplies.·Performs routine safety checks and maintains fluid levels in District vehicles.·When not engaged in maintenance work activities, may assist as required in a variety of grounds and/or custodial work throughout the District.·May work as part of a crew or independently on routine tasks.·Participates in District inservices, workshops and/or seminars. QUALIFICATIONS GUIDEKnowledge of:·Basic knowledge of construction, plumbing, electricity, air conditioning, refrigeration, heating and general equipment repair.·Operation of tools employed in building maintenance work.·General safety procedures and practices relating to the building trades.·Basic English usage, writing and math.·Hazmat and safety regulations.Ability to:·Learn new skills and perform maintenance duties.·Ability to troubleshoot and perform repairs with a minimum of supervision/assistance.·Maintain work schedules, deadlines and records in performing repairs.·Maintain work pace appropriate to given workload.·Use hand and power tools and power equipment.·Drive and operate a variety of vehicles and equipment used in maintenance trades legally and defensively.·Lift heavy items.·Understand and follow oral and written instructions.·Speak, read and write English at a level required for satisfactory job performance.·Maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.·Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance.·Maintain a pleasant appearance and demeanor.TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE·Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade; two (2) years experience in the performance of building maintenance (supporting documentation may be required); or any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities; character references may be checked.·Good work history and attendance.PERSONAL QUALITIESHigh degree of mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn new skills, routines and equipment.WORKING CONDITIONSEnvironment:·Outside environment.·Subject to adverse weather conditions.·Driving a vehicle to conduct work.·Subject to noise from equipment and tools.·Regular exposure to heat, cold, dust, odors, chemicals, pollen and dirt.·Ability to work around plants, shrubs and ground covers.Physical Abilities:·Good physical condition as determined by pre and current employment inquiries and health reports, school personnel and pupils.·Possess physical strength and stamina to do strenuous work.·Heavy work involving lifting, carrying (up to 50 pounds), pushing and/or pulling of objects (up to 100 pounds).·Standing for extended periods of time.·Physical dexterity in limbs and finger digits to operate equipment and to perform strenuous manual labor.·Bending, grasping, stooping and kneeling.·Walking over rough, uneven surfaces.·Digging.·Climbing ladders.·Seeing to perform work.·Reaching above shoulders.Hazards:·Working with machinery having moving parts.·Exposure to pollen, chemicals, pesticides and herbicides, gasoline and motor oil.·May involve ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, lifts and ramps.·Standing and walking for extended periods of time.LICENSESA valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s LicenseWORK YEAR:12 MonthsSALARY:Range 34Board Approved:March 6, 1990Revised:June 20, 2006
